Giuliani Assails Venezuela President But His Company Does Business
May 2nd, 2007
The Associated Press has a story about Rudy Giuliani’s comments in regards to Hugo Chavez with an interesting twist. While the candidate speaks ill of the leftist leader his law firm represents an American subsidiary of a Chavez-controlled oil company.
“Isn’t it annoying, upsetting and even in some cases a matter of national security that we have to send money to our enemies?” Giuliani asked. “We need a president who knows how to get things done so we don’t have to be sending money to Chavez.”
Now if the premise of Giuliani’s remarks had been “we need to fight for democracy” or “we need to rethink how we handle Venezuela” etc. I don’t think it would resonate so much. The problem is Giuliani is directly talking about doing business with the nation, something his law-firm is involved in.
Though Chavez is sending the money to us presumably the fact that this law firm is defending the country legally while Giuliani derides the fact that we are lending support, well, you see the problem.
This would be some good fodder for tomorrows debate!
