Mike Huckabee Says Michael Moore A Prime Example of Bad Health Care Practices

July 12th, 2007

Filmmaker Michael Moore has made Health Care a hot issue with his new documentary film Sicko. The top three democrats have released their own comprehensive plans (Look inside Obama & Clintons) and plenty of Republicans have a lot of things to say about the film and what they term “socialized medicine”.

Mike Huckabee has something else to add:

“Frankly, Michael Moore is an example of why the health care system costs so much in this country. He clearly is one of the reasons that we have a very expensive system. I know that from my own personal experience,” said Huckabee, who lost more than 110 pounds and became an avid runner after he was diagnosed with diabetes.

“I know how much more my health care cost when I didn’t take care of myself than when I do take care of myself, not only in terms of doctor visits but regular diseases, illnesses, chronic things that come up, monthly prescription bills,” Huckabee said. “All of those things have gone dramatically down since I’ve taken care of myself and worked to live a healthier lifestyle.”

Now I actually I have to agree with Huckabee on this one and have been noting it to people when discussing Moore’s film. If you look at the Democratic candidates plans and if you look into the Health Care debate you will actually see one of the major expenses of the system is chronic care brought on by people who are overweight and eat terribly fatty foods, not to mention smoke & drink.

That fact is almost nowhere in Moore’s film and it is not exactly personified in the personal appearance of the filmmaker. I personally take this issue seriously having lost 78 pounds in the last year and a half. Since doing so my own personal daily health and my healthcare costs have dramatically changed as has my personal appearance, my attitude and my energy level.

Is it a personal attack on Huckabee’s part? Yes, but a much needed one. If you are going to start attacking the health care industry, which is needed, you also need to be honest and point out what people can do to make a difference in that system themselves.

(Also lets be real here. A healthcare system that is paid by the taxpayers is going to come with an enormous cost. Part of that cost though is something most Americans aren’t going to like. In addition to taxing individuals we are going to have to start taxing the consumption of things that make health care costs rise. Read fatty foods, cigarettes, alcohol, empty calorie items like pop etc.)
