Writing Clinton’s Demise

January 7th, 2008

Right now the a full page of “developing” information is on Drudge with increasing speculation of Senator Clinton’s demise. The gist is that the campaign is struggling internally over the possibility of an emanent exit, with James Carville fighting to keep going until after Feb. 5 and others fighting to exit before the “Clinton brand” is tarnished.

I honestly have no idea if any of this is true. Right now the Washington Post is reporting that Clinton is taking “unprecedented” control over her campaign, while Thomas B. Edsall writes for Huffington Post that the campaign is preparing for “trench warfare”. Edsall reports that the camp is ready to take on Obama in South Carolina and fight past Feb 5.

So, what do we know? Probably almost nothing other than Clinton has a tuff fight ahead of her if she choses to stay in. One thing is for certain, the Drudge reports that Edwards is staying in and fighting because he is hoping of an eminent Clinton exit because of quickly drying campaign funds is probably true. Watching Edwards in the debate this weekend his strategy was pretty clear. Emulate the Obama message but put himself out as the one capable of achieving it, marginalize and destroy Clinton so that he can walk into a two-man race and hopefully slay Obama.

Meanwhile is Clinton a completely lost cause? Democratic strategist Bob Shrum gives his thoughts.
