Obama “Mentor” Invokes Race/Monica When Discussing Clinton
January 17th, 2008
Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Chicago’s United Church of Christ and a man the Baltimore Sun describes as “Barack Obama’s long-time spiritual mentor” raised some eyebrows Sunday in a sermon that invoked John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King in line with Barack Obama but more interestingly invoked Bill Clinton.
From the Sun report:
Some argue that blacks should vote for Clinton “because her husband was good to us,” he continued.
“That’s not true,” he thundered. “He did the same thing to us that he did to Monica Lewinsky.”
Many in the crowd were on their feet, applauding - amazed, amused and moved by the fiery rhetoric of their preacher, who is about to retire.
Wright is a well known reverend in the area and it was one of his sermon’s that inspired the title of Barack Obama’s book “The Audacity of Hope”. This is not the first time, however, that Wrights comments or sermons have left some questioning the relationship and Obama’s beliefs.
The Obama campaign released a statement about the comments:

“Like a member of my own family, there are things he says at times with which I deeply disagree but as he prepares to retire, that doesn’t detract from my affection for Reverend Wright or appreciation for the good works he has done.”
