This is the first time in Michelle Obama's adult life she's been really proud of her country? She went from growing up in a one-bed room apartment in Chicago, to graduating from Princeton University with cum laude honors, to Harvard for a law degree, to a law firm. It seems that Michelle has fulfilled the American dream and should have been proud of her country before now, when her husband may win in the Dem primary. It seems that some of the "I hate American crowd” are posting on this site. Are we suppose to run our country and foreign policy so that everyone in the rest of the world likes us and invites us into their houses? If your adolescent kids like you, you are doing something wrong. Is that the litmus test for this country, everyone else likes us? I don't agree with all of President Bush’s policies. He hasn’t been as conservative as I would have liked on spending and immigration, but he has stood firm on the one principal without which this great country ceases to exist: Keeping this country safe. We were attacked several times during Bill Clinton’s watch (Kenya, Tanzania, USS Cole, World Trade Center). Since 9-11 (just starting Bush’s term), no terrorist attacks. I wish Democrats/Liberals took pride in their county no matter who is in the White House. I couldn’t stand Bill Clinton, but still loved this country and I didn’t want to USA to be weak on security.

For the record I have been proud to be an American over the last twenty-six years. I don't always agree with the decisions of our leaders whether it be Iran Contra, Monica Lewinsky or even the Iraq War but I believe in the Constitution, a bicameral legislature, a union of states and what is often a very giving and dedicated American population.

Do we have problems? Yes. Will we always have problems? Yes. But as long as our nation's fundamental rules and principals exist no one leader or one decision can ruin our great Democracy or my pride. That is the beauty of a nation of individuals and states who change power without strife, war or the eradication of the rule of law.

So to answer your question I have been able to feel pride in the last twenty-six years, the last ten years, the last five years and the last three minutes. I have also not always been a fan of our leaders decisions but my ability to practice dissidence makes me even more prideful.

I agree with Mrs. Obama. I wouldn't really be proud of our country in the last few years. How could anybody be proud? I mean look at what type of president this country voted for last term; if it was not for Bush we wouldn't even have troops over in Iraq fighting a worthless war. In a way it is because of this country that we are in war as we speak. Why should anybody be proud of this country when we have people killing each other everyday, dirty cops protecting us, people still living in proverty. And you expect Americans to be proud of that?
And have we not have president's over the years to get people to write their speeches for them? So tell me this, what's the difference now? Obama had consent from that person, but nobody looks at Hilary to see if she took any words from anyone else. When an black person says something people want to twist and blow their words out of proportion...so tell me this why should we even be proud when racist is still going on in the world? THINK ABOUT IT!

Authorized or not authorized, Obama used, borrowed, stole, whatever, words and context as if they were his own. If this is not plagarism, at very least is DISHONEST!! AND SHAMEFUL.
I do not see him being fit for office in more ways than one.

It is sad she can not find a single reason to have been REALLY proud of her country. She is not first lady material, she is not a unitor. MO and BO are more power seeking than people know. They are a "pandoras box" full of surprises (borrowed speaches, hypocracy, double standards).....One that lives by the mighty sword (tongue) will die by it....

If people are going to criticize the lady at least get the quote right: "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country."
Focus on the words: adult lifetime, really, my country. Really! Did the lady say she has never been proud of her country in the last 25 years? NO, she said she was now she was REALLY proud of her country. She was proud before but now she was really proud to see the positive response to a call for a better America.
I was in the service of my country 40 years ago in Louisiana. I saw the white only drinking fountains. I saw white servicemen arrested for disturbing the peace because they entered black bars. I saw Jim Crow in all his ugliness. Ten days ago a Michelle’s husband got nearly as many white votes in that state as McCain and Huckabee did. That made me REALLY proud of my country. I was in the audience yesterday when Michelle spoke. This 60 yr male cried tears of joy as I realized America could reach its full potential.

People...relax a little here.
She may have had a poor choice of words, but her intentions are good.
Hilary says she doesn't like rhetoric; well here is your straight talk.
How many of you are really proud of the way this country has behaved in the recent past? How many of you have walked the streets of a country in Europe or Asia in the last 6 years and experienced the less than warm greeting from locals because you are American? I can tell you this, I have. I can also tell you that 20 years ago, walking similar streets, I would be invited in to people’s homes BECAUSE I was American.
With the sole exception of the patriotism inspired by the horrors of 9/11, when is the last time people have, en mass, been truly excited about be Americans?
I am a proud Veteran, I an grateful that I am an American. I am certainly not very proud of my country right now. I am proud of our freedom; I am proud of our soldiers, but proud of the face that America show to the world? Sorry, not right now.
Maybe it would be clearer if I said I love America, but I am not sure I like it very much right now.
Lighten up folks; she was being excited about the hope, the enthusiasm, the huge turn outs and new voter registrations at the polls. She is being excited about the future and being HONEST about her feelings.
