Geraldine Ferraro Steps Down

March 12th, 2008

After making comments many saw as racist Geraldine Ferraro, the first female candidate for the Vice Presidency, has stepped down from her fundraising position on the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Ferraro sparked controversy after saying:

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position,” she continued. “And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”

The Obama campaign had called for her resignation while the Clinton camp sought to distance itself from the comments. Ferraro spent the day defending the statement and even charged “reverse racism” from those who thought she held racist intentions while making the statement.
