NYT: Three Breaks Hillary Needs

March 19th, 2008

New York Times looks at the three ‘breaks’ Clinton needs. They are:

She has to defeat Mr. Obama soundly in Pennsylvania next month to buttress her argument that she holds an advantage in big general election states.

She needs to lead in the total popular vote after the primaries end in June.

And Mrs. Clinton is looking for some development to shake confidence in Mr. Obama so that superdelegates, Democratic Party leaders and elected officials who are free to decide which candidate to support overturn his lead among the pledged delegates from primaries and caucuses.

For Mrs. Clinton, all this has seemed something of a long shot since her defeats in February. But that shot seems to have grown a little longer.

I 100% agree, this nomination fight is by no means over but it is getting closer to be. This weekends developments went long way. In addition to the Pennsylvania win, if white voters resoundingly reject Obama there and begin to move away in the following states it will bode terrible for him in a general election and superdelegates might begin to look shaky.

I have said for over a year now and repeatedly, Democrats and liberals thinking they were simply going to waltz into the White House this year were in for a surprise and this weekend was the first step in some of them waking up to that fact. McCain is a strong and appealing candidate and the country, though tired of War and wanting Health Care reform, hasn’t suddenly moved to embrace liberalism, just moderation and accountability.

Dems need to get their act together quick not just in select a candidate but putting together an actual platform with a series of sound policy objectives and new strategies for dealing with the issues we face. Without them the message of lower taxes, security and fiscal conservancy will overpower change.
