Gay Marriage Issue Returns in a Big Way
May 15th, 2008
If you have been wondering what Republicans were going to talk about all summer, California may have just given you an answer. In a 4-3 decision the state Supreme Court struck down a ban on gay marriage paving the way for legalization throughout the state. The ruling said that civil unions were not a good enough alternative and that language limiting marriage to between a man and a woman is unconstitutional.
“There can be no doubt that extending the designation of marriage to same-sex couples, rather than denying it to all couples, is the equal protection remedy that is most consistent with our state’s general legislative policy and preference,”
As the largest state in the union, this ruling will likely have repercussions throughout the union. Meanwhile it will undoubtedly become a major issue in the 2008 campaign. More information as it comes in.
