The best all this campaigning had to offer?

September 17th, 2008

In my estimation both of the campaigns for president are acting in their worst interest right now. Each have been launching silly, inaccurate and downright mean attacks against one another that do little to raise the public discourse, give confidence to voters that they are reformers or solve problems. Neither candidate seems to have a really well defined plan for dealing with our economic woes and in a time when we need confidence in our elected officials, neither really stands out.

I don’t have much interest in writing about pig lipstick or who uses a computer better. Frankly if we are relying on the president to show off their computer prowess then I think we should immediately cut their staff in half. In reality the president doesn’t need to make PowerPoint presentations or spreadsheets and the attack is all the more appalling considering the fact that McCain cannot physically use a typewriter let alone a computer because of his war injuries.

Anyway where we stand in the campaign is infront of a massive void that neither looks likely to fill. So my advice to both is to suck it up and start acting like a president and not a national joke.

Really? The Obama campaign is engaging in something akin to the massive and well-documented lying by the McCain campaign around everything from Palin's earmarks to his own tax plan? I must have missed that. Likewise, I must also have missed the part where Obama started slinging the bulls#it – like “lipstick on a pig”=Sarah Palin – as well as the part where the Dems are required to take the high road all the time and get their collective ass kicked when the GOP starts in with that stuff. You know, like in 2004, when that tactic worked so well for John Kerry in the face of the Swiftboaters.

Further, the idea that there are no specifics coming from the Obama campaign on the economy is only true if you don't know how to navigate to his webpage on the topic, or are too lazy to do so. It may be that you don't agree with what's on that page – but the idea that he isn't offering specifics is unsupported by fact or history. Obama been very specific about pretty much every major issue for many months.

While no one wants to see a campaign about issues more than I do, your statement in this post is pretty clearly a false equivalence.

Oh, and I think this video lays some groundwork on specifics, points viewers to more information, AND elevates the discourse.
