Counting crowds: Palin draws 60,000
September 22nd, 2008
Not long ago Democrats boasted over the massive crowds Senator Obama was drawing to rallies, they saw it as a “movement” unique to our political times. Then came republican Sarah Palin and for the last few weeks the Republican ticket has been drawing crowds of thousands and TV ratings in the millions. Now comes a report that this weekend Sarah Palin drew a crowd of 60,000 in Florida.
I will setup the same standard for Palin as I did for Obama during the primaries, I think the size of crowds to rallies is misleading and an accurate indicator of very little more than some celebrity. Countless stories were written about how Obama would take New Hampshire because of the size of the crowds he was drawing. Few people noted that those crowds could have been made up of residents of nearby states who couldn’t vote in the primary.
Likewise, 60,000 people motivated enough to attend a rally is a wonderful thing in politics, but in a nation of 300 Million and a state with eighteen million of them, it is by no means a significant enough number to tell you much.
The only gathering of people that matters happens on election day. Until then its all just interest.
