Bill Clinton Volunteers Bush Sr., 41 Won’t Commit
December 18th, 2007
Bill Clinton has continued to make what I and a whole lot of other people see as gigantic mistakes on behalf of his wife. The latest was a statement earlier today that the first thing Senator Clinton would do if president is send him and Bush Sr. out to be ambassadors to the world spreading the word that “America is open for business again”.
Making such a assertion would lead one to believe that the elder Bush had already agreed to such a mission. In a statement released to CNN tonight Bush 41 denied such an agreement. From CNN
In a statement sent to CNN Tuesday afternoon, former President Bush’s chief of staff Jean Becker said that he “wholeheartedly supports the President of the United States, including his foreign policy. He has never discussed an ‘around-the-world-mission’ with either former President Bill Clinton or Sen. Clinton, nor does he think such a mission is warranted since he is proud of the role America continues to play around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy.
“President Bush is excited about several of the excellent Republican candidates running for president, and looks forward to discussing their candidacy once the Republican nominee is determined.â€Â
Now Ms. Clinton has suggested such missions would take place immediately and intoned that Bush Sr. would be called upon along with other republicans. She was always cautious and disciplined though having never come right out and said his name. One would just assume based on the two former presidents current relationship.
It was stupid Bill Clinton to make the suggestion and volunteer his friend in the first place. It was even dumber though to say it with argument that somehow such a mission would be to let the world know that the US was no longer operating under a failed foreign policy. A foreign policy CREATED BY THE FORMER PRESIDENTS SON!
Obviously Bush Sr. is going to endorse the republican nominee, he has made that clear in statement after statement. Obviously he isn’t going to come out and agree to such a trip during an election year when that nominee is running. Obviously he also isn’t going to go on record with any suggestion that HIS SON’S FOREIGN POLICY needs to be fixed by someone else and OBVIOUSLY even if he did sense a problem in global policy created by his son he wouldn’t go around being the one to fix it. He would work privately with others to do it.
So in short, stupid, stupid, stupid mistake here that is going to reflect poorly on his wife. It is true that the Clinton team is faltering and needs to get a grip but it is looking more like Bill might not be the savior.
