Hamilton on Adams vs. Jefferson (Think Coulter on McCain)

February 15th, 2008

The Election of 1800 principally positioned President John Adams against Vice President Thomas Jefferson, it was Federalist vs. Democratic-Republican, Republican vs Democrat, Founder vs. Founder. After several tumultuous years of living under the direction of Adams, many Federalists began to second guess their support. One of them was Alexander Hamilton, a bitter rival of Jefferson who said the following about his foe’s opposition to his president when facing the election:

“If we must have an enemy at the head of Government, let it be one whom we can oppose, and for whom we are not responsible, who will not involve our party in the disgrace of his foolish and bad measured.”

Is it just me or does that sound like the thought of some conservatives turning against McCain and hoping for a Democratic win today?
