Obama’s Says Racist Grandmother “Typical White Person”

March 20th, 2008

During his speech on race the other day Senator Barack Obama said the following about his grandmother:

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother - a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

Today Obama gave an interview to a philly radio station. During that interview the Philadelphia Inquirer noted:

610 WIP host Angelo Cataldi asked Obama about his Tuesday morning speech on race at the National Constitution Center in which he referenced his own white grandmother and her prejudice. Obama told Cataldi that “The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity, but that she is a typical white person. If she sees somebody on the street that she doesn’t know (pause) there’s a reaction in her that doesn’t go away and it comes out in the wrong way.”

I can only imagine the hell-storm that would ensue if Clinton or McCain said “typical black person” attached to anything.

It’s true that a white person couldn’t say that, but I don’t think white people need take any offense at that statement.

  2. Figueroa Slim Says:

Once in a long while, Slick Barry lets his true feelings slip. He’s a very polished speaker, but sometimes he moves off the script, and Jeremiah Wright comes out.

  3. Redphillyl Says:

I live in the city and State where Obama made his now and forever memorable statements. As quiet as it is being kept, there are places in Philadelphia where I as an African-American would not walk alone, day or night. The far Northeast, parts of South Philly, parts of Kensington. We all know not to go there alone. Our State is the epitomy about what Obama was talking. So, America, don’t act like you don’t understand what Obama is saying. If you don’t know, then don’t come to Philadelphia.

  4. Lazy Harp McGee Says:

What makes Obama an expert on the “Typical white person”? I’m white, I am not automatically afraid of people, no matter their color on the street. I am wary of people when the environment is considered, not the color of their skin.

  5. Pat Stephens Says:

It’s not automatically, its just if you see a bunch of black guys on the street looking tough, and you’re alone walking by them, you’ll probably feel a little frightened, its a subconscious reaction.

Everyone has a little racism in them and are in complete denial if they say the don’t.
