Clinton Says She Will Go After OPEC

May 5th, 2008

In the final hours before tomorrow’s vote Senator Hillary Clinton is going further than ever with her rhetoric against the oil industry. Today she said OPEC can “no longer be a cartel a monopoly that get together once every couple of months in some conference room in some plush place in the world, they decide how much oil they’re going to produce and what price they’re going to put it at.” She added “That’s not a market. That’s a monopoly.”

Clinton is already pushing a gas tax holiday which she would pay for by with a “windfall oil tax” or basically taxing profits made by the oil companies that Clinton and her administration would deem was too much. Such a tax was tried and failed in 1980.

In addition to the Obama campaign’s criticism of Clinton over her gas tax holiday proposal, they point out Clinton has not signed on to a bill banning to make oil-producing and exporting cartels illegal.
