Is McCain Shooting the Messenger?

July 2nd, 2007

The McCain camp let some more of its staff today (just as it did after Q1) because of poor fundraising. Frankly it is necessary, looking at Q1 numbers everyone saw that the former frontrunner was running pretty top heavy and reorganization seemed very necessary. McCain also admitted himself that he was the big problem in Q1.

Q2 saw the campaign with a new emphasis and that emphasis was to raise as much money as possible. Looking over his public schedule McCain was doing three or four fundraisers a day. It doesn’t seem like it paid off at all. He only raised $11.2 million this quarter and only had $2 million cash on hand. That is HORRIBLE, just HORRIBLE. Really I cannot even get into just how horrible that is. (Judging by the endless barrage of McCain banner ads on this site though one can figure out the campaign is ripping through money with no real rhyme or reason).

My thought is this though. As much as McCain needs to cut the staff I don’t really think it’s their fault. Frankly and being as non-partisan here as possible, McCain is turning out to be a pretty horrible campaigner and hasn’t been embraced by the party. When asked if he would drop out of the race he commented that anyone who thought it “was smoking something” but looking at those numbers. Wow, I just don’t see how he is going to stay in this.
