Living Up to the Geek Name
July 22nd, 2007
Hello everyone. It has been a bit since I’ve given a site update so I thought I would take a moment to do so.
I have the opposite problem of many Web managers out there. I have TOO MUCH content to provide, so much that there is barely anything here. Sounds kind of contradictory but its true. What I am lacking isn’t content or data but the time to actually bring it to you. See unlike all those fancy MSNBC/CNN type organizations ElectionGeek is a one man show. Just me, a laptop and a lot of data. A LOT of data.
The blog is what drives traffic but to really hold up to the Geek name I know I need to provide you with nitty gritty facts, figures and to give you access to trends. You need to know about the in’s and out’s of elections, past, present, & future which means lots of data collection, lots of programming and hopefully lots of disseminating. The problem is this site isn’t exactly paying the rent so I have to get it done in my spare time.
For instance this beautiful Sunday morning I programmed a database table full of state information. Specifically fifty states & D.C. worth of 2004 election result data. Eventually you will be able to go to a database-driven page about any state in the nation, lets say Alabama for now, and get all kinds of interesting information.
In addition to knowing when Alabama was admitted to the union, what its motto & state flag are, you will be able to see how it voted in the 2004 election. Why is that important? Because it helps you figure out how it might go in this election. So you will see who won, how many electoral votes they received, what percentage of the population turned out etc. etc. etc. Sounds pretty geeky right?
Well in addition you will see how Alabama is doing today. Who is polling well there now, what kind of organization the candidates have in-house, how much money is flowing into the campaigns from the state and to whom it is flowing too. All VERY important to any nerdy election watcher.
See, lots of data, lots of trending, lots of work.
I am doing my best though. The tuff part is knowing where to begin. I want to provide you with information on candidates, on money, on parties, organizations, media, historical data, polling, news, you name it. So much data, so much time, so much work!
So my point is, stay tuned, if you have been enjoying the blog I am happy, I will continue to keep it up to date and expand it into whole new areas. The rest of the site will grow too, it will just take some time.
