Morning Campaign Brew - 9/13/07

September 13th, 2007

News
- John McCain is going on a ‘No Surrender’ tour, defending the War in Iraq and attempting to revive his campaign. During a conference call with bloggers the Senator called MoveOn.org’s recent ads against General Patraeus ’scurrilous’.

- Yesterday saw a heat-up on the trail as Giuliani attacked Clinton, Romney attacked Obama and the Democratic Party went on the offensive against the Republicans, the administration and military leaders.

- Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is once again hinting he will run for president. What will it take? A commitment of $30 million from donors and “whether I think it is possible to run a campaign based on ideas rather than 30-second sound bites” which reads to me as… a commitment to $30 million dollars. A source close to Gingrich says the key timeframe for Newt to move is Oct. 15th when all candidates must pay $500 to be on the ballot in Utah.

- Clinton gave back $850,000 bundled by a criminal fundraiser, but signs are she would love to get that money back! (Well, duh!)

- President Bush will address the nation tonight at 9 p.m. eastern to discuss Iraq.

- Senator David Vitter (R - LA), who admitted his name was on the infamous DC Madam’s list, faces further problems. A New Orleans prostitute now claims she was regularly hired by Vitter and she has passed a lie detector test.

- A Republican debate on the spanish language channel Univision is not in the cards.

- Sources close to Democrat and former Gov. Mark Warner say he will run to replace retiring Republican and Virginia Senator John Warner in 2008. So we might see a Warner replace a Warner.

- Some conservative groups seem to be no fan of Mike Huckabee.

Polls
- In New Hampshire Hillary Clinton is still leading with 32% of the likely primary vote. Obama & Edwards tie in second place with 16%. Mitt Romney leads Republicans with 28% with Giuliani coming in second at 23%.

- Veteran Pollster Charlie Cook predicts 2008 will be a bad year for Republicans.

Campaign Trail
- Mike Huckabee will be doing a meet & greet in Iowa, Rudy Giuliani will be making an appearance in Atlanta, Georgia, John McCain has 4 rallies throughout New Hampshire, Mitt Romney will make an appearance and attend a fundraiser in Texas, Fred Thompson will hold rallies in Florida.

- Barack Obama will be attending town hall meetings in Iowa, Joe Biden will be attending meet & greets in Iowa, John Edwards will be giving a speech in Indianola, Iowa & Dennis Kucinich will be giving a speech in Hilo Hawaii.
