What if a Republican Said…?

October 9th, 2007

The other day Barack Obama said he wanted to be a “vessel of God” and create a “Kingdom of heaven on Earth” during a speech to a mega-church in South Carolina. FOX New’s John Gibson rightfully asks “What if a Republican had said that?”.

Now I am not normally one to quote John Gibson but I have to say it is a very good question. I know plenty of people in the liberal wing of the Democratic party and I can easily imagine them ripping a conservative to shreds over such a comment.

I think it is pretty savvy of Democrats to be more open about their religious convictions with voters. I don’t always know how genuine such public displays of religion are on either side of the isle but voters want to hear it and Democrats haven’t always done enough to court these voters, many of whom have liberal social views on things like foreign aid, support for the poor and the environment.

However there is a section of the left that has always believed firmly in the separation of church and candidate. This corner has repeatedly taken comments from Republican candidates about their faith and their views, from sex education, creationism and flat out simply suggesting they are in touch with God, and used them to attack.

So where is their ideology now as more Democratic candidates do the same? Where is the outrage pouring from the left which has been courting Obama for months now? I don’t see it and Gibson makes some good points.
